The valley twists, the path remains hidden
The footsteps call back echoes unbidden
The chill hangs heavy upon autumn air
A crisp quiet blanket thick with despair
Lost in the wild, with no map and no guide
Lost in the mist, slowly hope is denied
The mists in these mountains never depart
Fruitless searches gradually will lose heart
A sad silent end, lost here in this vale
A sad silent end, a sadly brief tale
Slowly trudging forward, hope waning fast
Wond’ring what may come once this life is past
Echoing back, he hears a voice calling
He cries in return, stumbling and falling
Picking himself up and running headlong
That familiar voice, like so sweet a song
And there up ahead, his family waiting
Whilst his tremulous fear's now abating
For here is his home, his comfort secure
The arms of his family, while life will endure.
